Projects underway

The Champlain Bridge, which opened to traffic on June 28, 1962, is named after Samuel de Champlain, the explorer who founded Quebec City in 1608. Today, it is the most heavily travelled bridge in Canada, which makes it a critical strategic route for the Montreal economy. The traffic on the bridge is estimated to be 59.4 million vehicles a year.

Connecting the municipality of Brossard with the borough of Verdun, it has a total length of approximately 6 kilometres. The bridge includes six traffic lanes separated by a median in the centre. The principal span is a steel cantilever structure.

The Champlain Bridge reserved bus lane is operated by the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) Monday to Friday between 5:30 and 9:30 AM and 3:00 and 7:30 PM. The bicycle path on the Champlain Bridge ice control structure is administered by the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau.

In addition to the Champlain Bridge, our corporation also manages other important infrastructures in proximity to the Champlain Bridge, namely the Clément Bridge and the L’Île-des-Soeurs Bridge, a section of the Bonaventure Expressway and Highway 15, as well as the Champlain Bridge ice control structure (Discover the Champlain Bridge area).

Major maintenance program

The Champlain Bridge is benefiting from a major maintenance program estimated at nearly $212 million allocated in 2009 for the 10 following years.

This maintenance program will allow for, among other things, the rehabilitation of the bridge piles as well as post-tension work on its crossheads and beams. Repairs to the deck joints and the steelwork as well as paving work will also be effected Begun last year and continuing this year, this work will occasion numerous night and weekend closings on the Champlain Bridge.

Please also note that as part of our regular maintenance program, closings are anticipated at Exit 2 (Pierre Dupuy Avenue) of the Bonaventure Expressway as well as on L’Île-des-Soeurs Bridge in the Pointe Nord sector of L’Île-des-Soeurs.

We invite you to visit this blog in order to follow work in this sector and to find out closing dates. You may also receive news by subscribing to our Newsletter, in Twitter or on our RSS feed.

Prefeasibility study on the future of the Champlain Bridge

In addition to the maintenance program, a prefeasibility study for the replacement of the Champlain Bridge was launched in 2009.

Nearly 50 years old, the Champlain Bridge is constructed primarily of reinforced concrete beams supported by concrete piles. The way it was constructed, the corrosion caused by road salt and the high volume of truck traffic have contributed to the aging of the structure.

The study, begun in 2009, will examine the possibility of building a new bridge or tunnel parallel to the current Champlain Bridge corridor. This study will also determine the number of traffic lanes that may be required to respond to present and future demand. The engineers will also study how a modern public transportation system could be integrated into the new structure, in order to connect Montreal’s downtown core to the South Shore. The question of Champlain Bridge replacement cost will be examined attentively and constitutes an important element of the study.

In order to determine the best option for users, the government of Canada will evaluate several options for the corridor, including rehabilitation of the current bridge.

Yes, there will be the completion of the roadwork on Highway 15 (Nuns’ Island Bridge) this upcoming weekend (October 29 and 30). Also note that the major weekend roadwork is now over for Champlain Bridge and Bonaventure Expressway. Night closures will continue to occur until the winter, but the major daytime work has been completed on those two structures. Moreover, the roadwork on Highway 15 should be complete this weekend.

Starting Friday October 28 at 10 PM until Sunday October 30 at noon, a single lane will be open towards Montreal on Highway 15 at the Nuns’ Island Bridge, while all the lanes will be opened towards the South Shore. Access to Montreal will be easier using the Bonaventure Expressway since it enables motorists to avoid the Highway 15 worksite during this period of time.

    Thank you.

    Dear Sir/Madam
Is the Pont Champlain Sud to # 20 Est open to traffic on October the 16th.? Thank You !

  5. André Girard :

    @ Charles

There is no closure planned during the day for this weekend on the Champlain bridge, because of Montreal Marathon. Thank you.

  6. Charles :

How do I find the construction lane closures for this coming weekend?

  7. Mike :

Is there work on the southbound Champlain on August 16?

  8. André Girard :

    @ Scott Hiltz

It’s not true at all, where did you ear that information?

  9. Scott hiltz :

I was informed today that no real work is being done on the bridge and that what is really being done is the installation of sensors that will notify the authorities of a colapse. Is this true?

  10. JP :

    Sorry,I meant the Champlain bridge.

  11. JP :

Any major road closers for the Canada Day weekend? Thank-you.

  12. André Girard :

    @Jen

There will be no major lane closures on the Champlain Bridge before next August unless we have an emergency. Therefore, traffic should be fluid.

  13. Jen :

I plan to go to lac brome from ottawa crossing champlain b early on Saturday jul 2nd and returning Sunday around noon. What kind of delays should I expect ?

  14. André Girard :

    @ Alexander

Due to the Grand Prix of Canada, traffic may be heavier around Saint Helen’s Island, but no roadwork is scheduled and all lanes will remain open to traffic on the Champlain Bridge, so around noon it should be ok, but it is difficult to be sure.

  15. alexander :

On June 11 around 12 noon will I have trouble crossing south on the bridge.. It is grand prix weekend…

    Hi
I’m planing to buy a business (gas station) in Monteregie ,and I’m living in Ils-des-soeurs , I would like to know in the next 2 years during the construction and the major maintenance of Champlain bridge , this bridge will be closed totally or partially ?

  17. André Girard :

    @ Oleg

No, there’s no such plan for the moment. Thank you.

  18. oleg :

hi! i heard that you ahve plance to make the crossing of the bridge for money? we will have to pay money for crossing the bridge?

  19. André Girard :

    @ Alain Maalouf

Yes, the study is underway and should be sent to the government by the end of this year. Thank you.

  20. Alain Maalouf :

Is the Federal Government still evaluating the new bridge or tunnel option? It’s great to see funds are being allocated to the maintenance of the bridge, but what will happen in 5-10 years when the bridge is really really tired. Thanks

  21. Not Happy! :

This is what happens when regular maintenance is ignored. This is unaceptable! We pay taxes which are not used for the right reasons and then we are the ones who have to face the consequences! I think a PPP structure would benefit us tremendedously as it would keep the involved parties on the hook!

  22. André Girard :

    @ Sylvia

We have some major closures for this weekend, please consult our last post which present the details of our work. Thank you.

  23. Sylvia :
